BUDDY STORY:
Mike & Ram
Mike joined the United States Marine Corps in September 1996 as an 0311 Infantry Rifleman. During his four years of service, he deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit/Special Operations Capable, training with militaries across the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
His unit supported operations in Croatia, earning the Expeditionary Medal, and later deployed to Haiti for Operation Uphold Democracy, where they spent five and a half months on the ground.
After his time in the Marines, Mike joined the Wyoming Army National Guard while attending the University of Wyoming. During that time, he deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom III. For over 11 months, he served alongside his unit on a variety of missions—experiencing everything from sniper fire to a helicopter crash, to rocket and mortar attacks.
When he returned home, Mike continued his service to his community as a police officer. Over the years, he worked with the Drug Task Force, joined the SWAT team as Lead Sniper and instructor, and taught firearms and active shooter response across the region.
After leaving law enforcement, Mike was given the opportunity to be matched with Ram. He calls Ram his “bro” because he’s always there for him. Ram joins Mike on hikes, camping trips, and adventures with his daughters. More than that, Ram has been a steady, calming presence in Mike’s life. When PTSD symptoms flare up or nightmares hit hard, Ram is right there—checking on him, gently waking him, and helping him find his footing again.
“Ram is amazing and I don’t think I could do life as well as I am without him being with me.”
