BUDDY STORY:

Jennifer & Harvey

Jennifer joined the Army in 2002 at age 19, continuing my family’s tradition of service. Stationed at Fort Irwin with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment OPFOR as a 63Y Tracked Vehicle Mechanic.

Jennifer deployed to Mosul, Iraq in 2005. During a mortar attack on April 16, 2005, Jennifer was helping to get her team mates and herself into the bunkers. Jennifer was severely wounded by the incoming mortars. Jennifer suffered shrapnel to her face, neck, right eye, arms, legs, and feet. Jennifer spent 2.5 months at Walter Reed, underwent surgery to remove shrapnel from her eye, and completed intensive physical therapy to walk again after being treated for cellulitis in her right foot. Jennifer became the first female in her unit’s history to receive a Purple Heart.

The compassionate care Jennifer received during recovery inspired her to continue her service and pursue nursing. Jennifer earned her BSN, now works as an RN, and is completing her Master Degree to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to caring for veterans.

Jennifer spent 3.5 years in active duty, followed by 4 years in the reserves.

December 2024, Jennifers 15 year old daughter Grace, was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident. This left Jennifer lost and in such a dark place, she just wanted to be with her daughter. Jennifer started to make plans to commit suicide.

In April of 2025, Buddy Up K9 was contacted by an Army Veteran asking for help for Jennifer. This led to a collaboration between Buddy Up K9, The Hunter7 Foundation and Trinity Oaks Outdoors to purchase Harvey, train him, and get equipment purchased.

In August 2025, Jennifer and Harvey met for the 1st time. They have been inseparable ever since. For the 1st time in 10 years, with Harvey by her side, Jennifer was able to go into public alone.

When my thoughts start to slip into darkness, he seems to know before I do. His presence grounds me in a way nothing else has been able to. He gives me purpose and has literally saved my life.
— Jennifer
